LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's latest iPhone looks set to become its bestselling device ever, and one reason appears to be disenchantment with rival smartphones. Nearly one in four people who thronged Apple stores from Tokyo to San Francisco told Reuters on Friday they were ditching BlackBerries, discarding Nokias or even giving up Google Android-based phones, hoping

Do you know where your Samsung Galaxy S2 is? When did you last see your iPhone 4S? If you've lost your smart phone, you'd better resign yourself to never seeing it again, as new research reveals barely half of smart phones get returned. Security firm Symantec decided to see what happens to lost phones in its Smartphone Honey Stick Project. When you mislay your phone, will you ever see it again -- and how safe is your data when

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has appeared on a phone retailer's pre-order page, detailing what could be the specs of Samsung's much yearned-for follow-up to the Galaxy S2. The listing, spotted by Recombu, appeared on mobilecityonline.com, a site that sells unlocked phones and mobile accessories. Is the listing genuine? It's impossible to tell, but I've contacted Samsung for comment and will update this story if I hear anything one way or the other. We've also sent Mobilecityonline a message to

The first details are emerging of Nokia's Windows 8 tablet, a 10-inch dual-core slate expected to challenge the iPad at the end of this year. The Nokia tablet will be a 10-inch model to take on Apple's new iPad and its 10-inch competitors. It'll be run by Windows 8, the next generation of Microsoft's operating system, and powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset. Windows 8 works on both computers and tablets, controlled by a scaled-up version of

Apple reveals the first batch of new iPads has sold out -- no surprise there -- and if you order online now you will have to wait a bit longer. Both black and white models are listed on Apple's website as expected in a vague two to three weeks. If you were eager enough to place an order before now, you should receive your new toy from Apple on Friday, the day of release. If not, it sounds like

If you want to protect your Android device from pilfering your pocket in a bout of Bender-esque criminality, you'll want to tighten up your handset's security. But nearly six in 10 malware protection apps for Android are, if one may employ the French vernacular, mal at detecting threats. With over 450,000 apps now available on Google Play (aka Android Market), quadrupling since July 2010, dastardly 'Droid-damaging deeds and malicious money-making mischief is on the rise. Your phone's increasingly under

Retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U along with networks Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile all appear to have dropped the HTC Titan from their ranges. It's the Monday of iPad Week so of course Apple mania is setting in. We're full to bursting with Apple stories, from the 25 billionth Apple app download to a reet good iPad 3 concept video. But there's still time for a few other technological bits and scary space-related bobs, including a terrifying new Facebook competitor, a fake heart and an invisible car. Well, sort of. The €450 device, however, which was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, runs on software that Nokia is phasing out in favour of Windows Phone. Mary McDowell, the firm’s executive vice president for mobile phones, said that the firm’s engineers had been working on the product “for years”. She said it was “natural” to assume that its technology would be used in other Nokia products in the future, although she declined to be drawn specifically on

The rise of ‘nomophobia’ – the fear of being without your mobile phone – is completely understandable. As smartphones increasingly become the norm for most of the nation, I am shocked that only 66 per cent of those recently polled on this issue, said they were suffering from this 21st century syndrome. I recently left my phone at home on a work day and I genuinely felt panicked without it. My phone is now my email device,

If any of you are native speakers of the Japanese language, the launch of iOS 5.1 is probably a massive deal. But for the rest of us, it's just a matter of tweaking what's already out there. The update is offered to all users of iOS 5, whether you've got an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod touch, and it's out there already – just turn on your device and you'll probably be offered the download. No wiring up

The popular app is coming "really soon", the app's founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger said at a South by Southwest conference presentation. "In some ways, it's better than our iOS app. It's crazy," Systrom said. Instagram is a free photo sharing app that lets users touch up and share photos with other followers on the app; pictures can also be uploaded to social-networking sites like Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook. With the iPad 3 expected to be announced this week, the Apple rumor mill has shifted its sights to a possible release of a 7-inch "iPad mini" later this year. Although (so far incorrect) rumors of a smaller form factor iPad have been floating around for a couple of years, the latest "confirmation" comes from a pretty reputable source - Samsung. An official-looking Samsung Securities document, provided to OLED-Display.net by an anonymous source, says that Apple has plans to
